Amy the "Special" Parrot

Larry, a breeder of birds, knows he has a very special parrot, was curious about how they came together in the first place, and wanted to be sure he was doing everything he could to make Amy happy. As it turns out, Amy, now 8 years old is as fond of Larry as he is of her - and quite willing to talk about it and a lot of other things.

When Larry, Amy’s owner called to arrange the appointment, he was mostly concerned that Amy was happy. He wanted to be sure that she was OK with the fact that Larry and his wife were now breeding birds, so there was lots of competition for his attention. He wondered if she’d ever talk and if she had any special requests.

Before they arrived for their private appointment, I called Laura Simpson for her insights and to check in on Amy’s general health and well-being.

Here’s a summary what she had to say:

Amy may be responding to a little of Larry’s guilt about spending so much time with the other birds... but mostly it’s about being special... she wants to be special, and to learn more, and she definitely wants to spend more time with Larry - she expects him to teach her, wants to be more human - share his meals a bit, also wants to go out to play and learn more - but not on his shoulder - on his finger...

He should begin to think of her more as a companion - she understands the difference between her and "the breeder birds", (which she refers to, by the way, in a quite condescending tone) and she wants Larry to understand the that she knows she’s special, and different from the others. She also wants Larry to relax a little more, so she can and she wants to reassure him that she will eventually speak, she is just young yet and needs time to develop those skills - and her vocal cords.

She’s very healthy, seems to be a little cramped - Larry could move her cage around a little more often. Her only request at this time seems to be to have a little more time with Larry....

When Larry arrived the next day, Amy was clearly excited and keen to communicate with me. I relayed Laura’s information, and now Larry had several more specific questions

:Did Amy want a larger cage?
To which she responded with a resounding "YES, and NOW! please!"

When would Amy begin to speak and was there anything he could do to help her?
She answered immediately that around the age of 12, she would begin to communicate vocally, but she was ready to start learning some words now. However she wanted Larry to shave off his mustache, said it confused her, made it difficult for her to watch his mouth to see what he was saying. She also made it clear that she communicated with him and his wife all the day - they just needed to pay more attention to the thoughts that she was sending them. She wanted me to talk with him about developing his listening skills - to which I obliged....

Was she physically comfortable?
Amy said that she was mostly comfortable and she likes being in the sun, but at times her cage got a little warm. Those were the times when she’d like to be moved around the house more.

What could Larry do to help her feel "special"?
Again, Amy had a fast answer there, take her out more often. She like going out with Larry and wanted him to take her with him as often as possible. And she especially liked going for walks in the park where she could show off and meet the kids.

Amy then proceeded to tell me why she had immediately recognized Larry at the pet shop that first day when they met and she started calling him "Pawpa". (He had earlier told me of how they came to meet and the instant love affair that had started between him and Amy.)

She said she knew him from a past life in the tropics - they had been buddies then. But Larry died too soon in that lifetime and Amy was determined that in this one she’d catch up with him again to finish what they had started long ago.... it seemed that Larry had started to teach Amy to speak in another lifetime, it whetted her appetite to learn more.

Then she spoke of Larry’s wife. She is very find of her and worried about her. At first I couldn’t quite "get" what Amy was saying, and this was when I knew for sure we were having a real conversation and she is a brilliant bird! As soon as she saw my confusion, she began gesturing with her head and I immediately got what she meant- she wanted Larry’s wife to get more rest, and him too, for that matter! Larry burst out laughing at that remark, commenting how busy they had been lately, there had been little time for any R&R and his wife was indeed, very tired.

This was a most amazing interview for me. I think Amy the parrot is a natural teacher and communicator. And she'll definitely talk when she's ready - a lot!

In the hour we were together, she gave me an amazing lesson in communicating with her and inspired me to connect more often with the birds around me - and maybe even to get a parrot of my own one day! I was enthralled at how easily she entered into conversation with me, how responsive she was, how intelligent and how very, very special!
