Dan Millman, The Peaceful Warrior

Dan Millman is a former world champion athlete, university coach, martial arts instructor, and college professor.
After an intensive, twenty-year spiritual quest, Dan's teaching found its form as the Peaceful Warrior's Way, expressed fully in his books and lectures. His work continues to evolve over time, to meet the needs of a changing world.
Dan's thirteen books, including Way of the Peaceful Warrior, have inspired and informed millions of readers in 29 languages worldwide. The feature film, "Peaceful Warrior," starring Nick Nolte, was adapted from Dan's first book, based upon incidents from his life.
Much of Dan's time is devoted to writing and speaking. His keynotes, seminars, and workshops span the generations to influence men and women from all walks of life, including leaders in the fields of health, psychology, education, business, politics, sports, entertainment, and the arts.
Dan and his wife Joy live in northern California. He has three grown daughters and two grandsons.

A Note on What I Teach Tuesday September 02nd 2008, 6:07 pm
Says Dan: "Some readers of my first two books, or those who viewed the "Peaceful Warrior" movie place undue emphasis on certain mysterious incidents such as Socrates' "jump" to the rooftop, or energy healing, or the visionary experiences I described after Socrates "grabbed me by the head." These instances are mostly fictionalized narrative inserted into my autobiographical story in order to convey teaching points and reminders, and to draw the reader more deeply into the story and its lessons.
My work, today — as it has been for more than a decade — is about kindness, clarity and practical wisdom rather than on magical thinking or metaphysical phenomena. So I want to make it clear that (in contrast to what is implied in the movie), the search for happiness is less significant than our universal quest for deeper meaning, purpose and connection (with self, others, and the transcendent).
One of my favorite quotations is by philosopher-playwright George Bernard Shaw:
Never mind likes or dislikes; just do what needs to be done. This may not be happiness, but it is greatness.
I concur. Feelings of happiness (and deeper cousins, satisfaction and fulfillment) are certainly lovely when they occur, but are largely overrated in the context of a meaningful life.
For a fuller understanding of my teachings, I invite you to read Wisdom of the Peaceful Warrior and my other core teaching books ( No Ordinary Moments, The Laws of Spirit, The Life You Were Born to Live, Everyday Enlightenment ) together form a comprehensive course in the peaceful warrior's way. ttp://www.danmillman.com/
Excerpt from his article Just Enough:
In real life, with its variety of personalities, it may be best to let go of the labels and just be who we are. In fact, I wish you:
Just enough paranoia to stay alert to frauds and tricksters.
Just enough schizophrenia to have a rich and creative imagination and associations.
Just enough dyslexia to see the world a little differently from others.
Just enough ADD (and hyperactivity) to be vibrant and a wellspring of different interests.
Just enough bi-polar qualities to experience life's ups and downs fully, with passion.
My heart goes out to those people who have serious physical or mental pain and disability. Mental and physical illness are no laughing matter. But as the saying goes, "In each of us lives all of us." Let's recognize that we each have seeds of every sort of malady, but we cope and learn and adjust in daily life, functioning as best we can.
You and I are not either sick or well, ignorant or enlightened — we are all these things in different moments. We live in that world of in-between, sometimes this and sometimes that. We are not labels, categories or diagnoses. We are interesting people in quite an interesting world.
