2008, Tones of the Times
by Danielle Daoust
2008 is a 1 year and also the Year of the Earth Rat, the first year of a 60 year cycle in the Chinese zodiac... so this is a terrific year to make a new start, whether in work or at home. Some believe that the Mayan Calendar actually ends in 2008, not 2012 and that this could be a time of some significant cataclysmic events. But that is not the picture we see when we look into 2008. While we will see and feel the planet shifting its weight around, with some disastrous effects - global warming manifests in pockets all over the planet - 2008 shows energetically as being a somewhat gentler, kinder year. We should see some improvements in property markets, the economic recession in North America should ease and with Rat influencing the year's priorities, we'll be in the mood to socialize and attend to our families.
Earth Rat spells new beginning for 2008. The Chinese welcome Rat as a protector and bringer of material prosperity. Rat‘s qualities are associated with aggression, wealth, charm, and order, yet also associated with death, war, the occult, pestilence, and atrocities. 2008, influenced by Earth Rat should see a stabilizing of economic conditions - but could also influence the opening or worsening of some major international conflicts. |

In Numerology, 2008 is a "1" year, a year when creativity and independent thinking produce excellent results. However strong opinions in opposition to each other can also spell trouble - we'll be challenged to listen to our opponents and to think outside the box! This is the year when concepts that would have been considered too risky or avant-garde just a few years ago will be acted upon and could pay off in extraordinary ways.
On the negative side, in a one year, we may find some of the world's leaders stubbornly holding their positions, despite evidence that change is necessary... and this year could see some of the planet's dictators getting greedy, attempting to impose even tighter controls over their subjects.

General Trends
Expect the unexpected in 2008! Bhutto's assassination in Pakistan certainly set the tone for this year - a shocking turn of events that will reverberate through the international community for months - and perhaps years to come. Fortunately, not all of the unexpected news this year is bad - we could also hear of some amazing and simple treatments and cures coming from the medical community, creative solutions to some of the water problems that plague many countries today, and some breakthrough technological advances that could open the doors to even more significant improvements in the next decades... And with these advances we see deep cost reductions that will make some current technology like IPods far more accessible to the masses - and more useful.
2008, however is not an easy year financially. While we did see some slight improvements in the US economy as election time comes closer, this year will be unstable as major global markets struggle to deal with restructuring. European Markets will be pushed to maintain the balance as Asian and North American economies weaken with increasing debt loads. Even India, strong for the past decade, begins to pull back in response to increasing pressures from its primary trading partners, as well as from the unrest in Pakistan - it's traditional "enemy".
The Big Stories for 2008
I used the Russian Gypsy Fortunate Telling Cards to help me identify some of the key stories in the news in 2008, and was amused to see how the Tarot reading I laid out later added to and underlined some of these stories:
We see some marriages in the news this year, the sense of a few surprising "elopements" - what I pick up here is the sense that many celebrities are choosing to avoid the media, almost at all costs. Some have soured also on the lavish celebrations that have become rather common in recent years. We'll see more Garbo-like behaviour in our celebrities, so we'll be shocked when hear of these couplings. One of these seems to be a dark-haired Gemini male who will prove to be a wonderful husband - and also very successful as a producer.
We see also a shocking loss, a loving union broken probably by a terrible accident or an illness that overtakes a body very quickly. Could be an Aries or a Virgo involved, or at that time of year.
Dictatorships around the world will be challenged this year by increasing demands for freedom - freedoms that felt as something of a nuisance, a threat to their autonomy. Venezuela is one of the countries we see where the leaders are attempting to tighten control, but the effect is to increase strength in the opposition. Although we may not see revolutions this year, we see the pressures for change mounting and the stage being set for shifts in the existing power structures, especially where these currently represent the "old guard".
To no one's surprise, we also see the environment as one of our biggest stories in 2008 - a tsunami coming to get some a large chunk of beach, the Ring of Fire active around the Pacific Rim, poles melting causing more and more communities to move back from their traditional homelands in both the North and the South.... Alaska, the Canadian Far North, Russia's Siberia, Scandinavian countries, Argentina, Chile, Australia and New Zealand will be forced to reevaluate many development plans in light of environmental issues that are reaching disastrous proportions.
The world's water levels are rising with the melting of the poles, which also means that coastal areas will be under more pressure than ever and 2008 could see a number of powerful storms that cause severe inland flooding - even the risk of a breakdown in one of the world's major dams. The potential for losses from water damage of all sorts is higher in 2008 than it has been for years... and this encompasses events like mudslides, blizzards, ice storms.
One interesting story involves a plot that is foiled, a deception uncovered in time to avoid an attack. This story may not actually be released to the media until long after the event because of the security issues around it.
Turkey is the source of a big story in 2008 - someone imprisoned unfairly, an earthquake that devastates, intrigue that backfires.
Afghanistan and Iraq remain as big stories in 2008, not a lot of progress indicating here on either side... on the upside, there is a sense of a greater understanding coming in the West of the real complexity of the political/tribal and economic influences affecting a resolution of conflicts, but at the same time, it becomes very clear that there is no easy solution and the use of force simple seems to increase resistance. With tensions in Pakistan increasing, we see a real risk of nuclear disaster coming from this part of the world.
Our warriors get some extra help this year in the form of some technological advances that appear to make it easier to avoid - and also initiate - night attacks and to keep track of the enemy's movements in the dark.
We may also see a surprising friendship between countries that have not traditionally agreed, but are now pushed together by circumstances and find the alliance useful - and potentially long-lasting. Palestine and Israel come to mind.
Another year to invest in the environment. With global warming getting so much attention, we will see any industries associated with the environment gain in value.
Industries and stocks associated with metals, the earth, technology should do well this year, but markets are generally unstable.
A good year to be conservative with spending, to avoid taking any major risks... while we see property markets improving somewhat, the environment, and continued recession in the US drags down any real growth that may be possible
I think the biggest news economically is that our leaders will finally start talking openly about the fact that we are in a recession and that measures must be taken quickly to initiate a recovery.
The most significant health issues I believe this year are weather- and water-related. Extreme weather conditions that cause major storms, that leave without electricity or good water... a killing heat in drought-ridden parts of the world, earthquakes that rupture gas, sewage and water lines, in some cases permanently....We see water in short supply - many regions without good water for extended periods. Even worse that what we saw on 2007.
Famine, drought, and it's opposite, flooding, may be at the bottom of the the predominant health issue in 2008...with the environment creating challenges in many parts of the world, food supplies are also cut off, crops destroyed....
