Aromatherapy and Kids

Recently, one of our visitors inquired about the viability of starting a small business that used essential oils in some lovely stuffed toys... Not a good idea, here's why.

Essential oils can be valuable for changing the mood and for healing, but great caution must be exercised when using real essential oils on children or on anything they might pick up or play with.

Says Laura Simpson :

I would have to say, "Don't do it." The aroma oils are too strong for babies to be in close contact with. There could possibly be some aromatherapy in the room with the child but not on anything that they could rub or suck on. Most aroma oils are so strong that it is not recomended that adults place them on their skin, and babies skin is so delicate they could easily be burned by the volatile pure oils.

It's a sweet idea but my suggestion would be to keep it simple for the little sweet hearts. Their olfactory systems are just learning about the world and even perfumes that Moms and Dads wear can be too much. Smoking should not be done around a baby for that reason as well. The babies can be over stimulated and can develope asthma and allergies if exposed, too soon, to things in the environment that we take for granted

I'm glad you asked the questions. I think it could be a sweet thing but the child should not hold the toy, sleep with it in it's crib, or suck it. You know how babies are always grabbing things then exploring them with their mouths. In this day of litigation I don't think I would chance the liability.

The best way to use oils around small children would be in a diffuser, and then only very lightly. Love, Laura
