Tell Us Your Story

Knock, Knock, Knock

by Gary Anderson

I'm now 52 yrs. old and to this day I have told but just a few about what I'm about to tell you. Not that the walls were dripping blood---I'll leave that to the movies!!

At the time I was maybe 10 or 11. I and my brother were living with our grandmother in northern Michigan. It was deep in the winter and I had just finished banking the furnace for the night as it was one of my duties. And as we almost always did before going to bed, we set around the table with a late night snack ( Peanut butter sandwich, cookies, cake, or something else but always fresh cows milk--I miss the fresh cows milk with the cream floating on top) ---She would tell my brother and I stories about her past that never got old or boring.

One story in particular always seems to stick in my mind. It was the knocking at the door. She would tell us and swear it to be true that if there was a knock at the door and no one was there it had a meaning.

She said that if there was one knock that someone in the family would get ill --if there was two knocks someone would get seriously ill and may die --three knocks meant someone in our family would die.

It was about 10:00pm and it had been snowing all evening. We were doing as we have always done, having our late night snack and talking before going to bed. There was a three knock at the door. I went to the door, turned on the outside light. I opened the door to find no one there. I turned and told my grandmother that there wasn't anyone and noticed that she looked upset. I opened the door again and saw that there were no tracks in the snow.

There is no way that a living breathing person could have knocked at that door and not leave a print in the snow. My grandmother's brother died two days later. My grandmother told me long after that night that the knocking at door has been something that has been in the family for as long as she could remember and in fact it was told to her by her grandmother.

What I have just told you is true. I guess it's a believe it or not sort of thing!!!!
